Troubleshooting Low Well Water Pressure: Causes and Solutions

Top causes of low well water pressure and what to do about it.

July 15, 2025 by

Low water pressure from your well can have many different causes. Correctly identifying and fixing the problem is key to having adequate water pressure and keeping your well fixtures in good condition. Here’s a look at some common well issues that cause low water pressure, along with actions to address them.

Tap water

Low-Yield Well

The most basic cause of low water pressure is an inadequate water supply. Numerous factors can cause a well to produce less water, including:

  • Overuse
  • Drought
  • Seasonal water table fluctuations
  • Dense soil or bedrock

When you drill a well, you create a new channel for underground water to travel through. There’s natural pressure due to the water being underground that pushes it into the well and aboveground—helped along, of course, by pumps, well casings, and other well fixtures. If there’s not enough water available to create adequate pressure underground, though, the well fixtures may not be able to make up the difference.

Several strategies can help address water pressure issues resulting from a low-yield well. You can contact your local well contractor to evaluate the situation and advise on next steps.

Reduce Water Usage

If a low-yield well is causing your low water pressure, a simple solution is to reduce your water usage. If more water is available, then the overall pressure will improve. You can also adjust the timing of your water usage. Spreading out demand can allow your well to resupply in between activities, resulting in improved pressure when you do draw water.

Water Storage Tanks

If you need more water than your well can consistently supply, consider installing a water storage tank to bridge the gap. These tanks typically “sip” water from your well throughout the day and night and store it for later use. Having stored water means consistent pressure as you draw it from the tank, and you’re not stressing your well by frequent large draws during busy periods.

Deepen the Well

If your well contractor determines that your low water supply is due to a too-shallow well, you might have the option to deepen your well. Drilling further down can help access more water, thus improving overall water pressure.

Consider Hydrofracking

In consultation with a professional, you can also consider hydrofracking. Your well contractor will use high-pressure water to fracture the rock surrounding your well. The fractures can allow more water from the surrounding area to travel to your well site, thus increasing your overall supply.

Before taking any action, contact your local well contractor to assess the situation. They have the experience and equipment to determine why your water supply is low and can walk you through options to fix the problem.

Compromised Well Pump

Another common cause of a low-yield well is the well pump. The well pump brings water from the well into your home’s plumbing system. If it’s compromised, your water pressure can significantly decrease.

A well pump can underperform for several reasons, including:

  • Age
  • General wear and tear
  • Incorrect size

If your pump is old or damaged, repairing or replacing it may resolve your water pressure issue. Your well contractor can help assess the state of your pump and determine if it’s repairable or if you need a new one altogether.

In some cases, the size of the well pump itself can cause low water pressure. A pump that is too small won’t be able to maintain consistent water pressure.

During well installation, your well contractor determines what size pump you need based on:

  • Water demand
  • The size and scope of your plumbing system
  • The depth and flow rate of your well

If any of these factors change, or if the water table itself changes, your pump may struggle to keep up with your water usage. If that’s the case, installing a new pump sized appropriately for your well and your water usage is key.

Clogs and Leaks

Well water travels a considerable distance before it reaches your tap, showerhead, or hose. If any part of the system is clogged, has buildup, or is leaking, you’ll have lower water pressure.

Clogs, of course, will impede water flow and decrease water pressure. Even partial obstructions, mineral deposits, or sediment can hinder water flow.

Likewise, leaks can also decrease water flow and water pressure. Cracked pipes, worn seals and gaskets, and corrosion can all contribute to leaks. Resolving these issues is crucial to restoring and maintaining consistent water pressure.

Using specialized equipment and expert knowledge, your well contractor will be able to diagnose and locate clogs or leaks and resolve them effectively. They may repair or replace a discrete component, or they may need to replace entire sections of your well or plumbing system. Whatever the situation, your well contractor can help find the right course of action.
