Should You Use Your Well to Fill Your Swimming Pool?

Learn the pros and cons of filling your swimming pool from your home water well.

September 19, 2022 by

Having a swimming pool on your property is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, especially during warm weather. If you use a well as your water source, though, you might want to think twice about filling your pool from home.

You Can Fill Your Pool From Your Well…But Should You?

It’s absolutely possible to fill your swimming pool from your well. There are no regulations that prevent you from doing so. However, filling your pool may overtax your well and compromise your water supply. This is especially true if:

  • You have a low-yielding well
  • Your area is experiencing drought
  • You live in a highly developed area with many households taxing the water supply

What it boils down to is this: if you use water at a greater rate than the groundwater replenishes, you run the risk of running your well dry, damaging your pump, and disrupting your household water supply for other necessary fixtures like sinks, toilets, showers, and more.

Alternate Pool-Filling Options

Instead of filling your pool from your well, consider working with a water delivery service instead. While the costs of water delivery can be high, it might beat the risk of compromising your water supply.

How do you find a water delivery service? You can simply search for water delivery in your area or call your pool contractor for advice on water delivery options.

Filling From Your Well

If you are certain that your well has the capacity to handle filling your pool, it is certainly possible to do so. If you go this route, it may be advisable to fill your pool in short bursts. This means filling for an hour or two at a time and then taking a break in order to give your well a chance to refill.
