How to Address Low Water Pressure From Your Well

Learn the causes of low water pressure from your well and what you can do about it.

January 12, 2023 by

Having good water pressure is important! If you get your water from a residential well, you may run into water pressure issues specific to well use. Read on to learn why this happens and what you can do about it.

Adjust Well Pressure Tank Settings

If your water pressure is low, it may simply mean that you need to adjust the settings on your pressure tank. This is the part of your water supply system that controls the pressure of the water when it travels from your well to your home. Water pressure is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI).

Your pressure tank signals the well pump to bring in more water if the PSI drops to a certain level. It also signals the pump to stop once the water reaches a certain level. Changing those numbers can easily boost your water pressure.

Upgrade Your Well Water Pump

If you have adjusted your pressure tank settings and your water pressure is still too low, it may be time for a new type of well pump. Switching from a standard pump to a high flow capacity pump can be a game-changer. If your pump is able to bring more water in, then the water pressure will increase.

Opt for a Constant Pressure System

In some cases, water pressure issues come and go. If this is the case, you might look into installing a constant pressure system to create more consistency.

A traditional well pump and pressure tank system allows for pressure fluctuations of around 20 PSI. This means that the water pressure can vary by quite a lot even when the system is working perfectly.

A constant pressure system reduces that fluctuation to around 2 PSI, meaning that the tank will signal the pump to bring in more water when the pressure drops even slightly. This keeps the overall water pressure more consistent.

Reduce Water Usage

In some cases, the cause of low water pressure may not have to do with your pressure tank or well pump. It’s possible that the actual water level of your well is too low to support your home water usage.

Water level issues often resolve on their own over time, but they’re still inconvenient! If your low water pressure is due to reduced availability, your best bet may be to conserve water over the short term. If the problem continues, you can contact a local well company to evaluate the situation and advise on next steps.
